Attorney Nicholas C. Zales graduated from Marquette University Law School in 1989 and was admitted to practice law in the State of Wisconsin the same year. He completed undergraduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1985. In his first professional position, he served as a judicial law clerk at the Milwaukee County Circuit Court. In this Civil Division position, Zales rose to senior law clerk and learned the workings of civil litigation and judicial behavior from the inside.

Zales was admitted to practice in Wisconsin’s Eastern District U.S. Federal District Court  in 1989 and to the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in 1998. As a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, he won the State Bar President’s Award for Distinguished Service in June 2010. Attorney Zales is familiar with small business litigation, commercial litigation, trademark and copyright law.

Based in Milwaukee, Attorney Zales opened the Zales Law Office more than 20 years ago and used what he learned as a judicial clerk to help represent his clients. In addition to civil litigation, Zales began to practice appellate law in both state and federal courts. Today, he concentrates on representing small business owners by helping to protect their rights and defend against lawsuits in trial and appeals courts.

Attorney Zales has been elected to the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Board of Governors, representing the lawyers of Milwaukee County, serving in that position for 11 years.  In 2015 he was once again elected to the State Bar’s Board of Governors for a term beginning July 1, 2015 through 2017.  He has served on the State’s Judicial Council and presently serves on the Bar’s Communications Committee, the editorial board for the Wisconsin Lawyer, the State Bar’s official monthly magazine. Zales has also been a prolific author for Wisconsin publications, authoring 13 book reviews for the Wisconsin Lawyer and 16  “In Chambers” feature interviews with Wisconsin appellate court judges for De Novo, the newsletter of the Appellate Practice Section.

A native of Glencoe, Illinois, Zales, is a member of New Trier West High School’s Class of 1976.  In his free time, Zales is an astronomy buff and likes to hike and camp in Wisconsin’s state parks, taking pictures of landscapes.
